BREAKING NEWS - JULY 2023: ANNOUNCING THE ADDITION OF THE NEW DOONGALIK AUDIO LIBRARY for public ACCESS TO THE POPULAR “junkanoo talks” RADIO SHOWS!

Doongalik is extremely proud to uphold our mission to preserve and celebrate our unique Bahamian art and culture, and to honour our heritage!

During 2023 during which we celebrated our 50th Anniversary Year of Independence, it was a pleasure to demonstrate the importance of recognizing our past in order to ‘mark the manner of our bearing’ in our progress through the present, and ‘forward upward onward together’ into the future!

The popular "Junkanoo Talks" radio show, hosted by the late Jackson Burnside and co-host Arlene Nash-Ferguson, began broadcasting 25 years ago on Saturday July 11, 1998 with MORE FM Radio Station from the Doongalik Studios porch, along with inaugural guest, the late, great John "Chippie" Chipman. The Junkanoo Talks radio show episodes, which spanned 13 years of weekly audio history of interviews with Bahamian guests, as well as amazing reflections and insights into the past and the present.

Countless examples of brilliant Bahamian creativity in all facets will now be accessible to the listening public for educational and historical purposes at this podcast link HERE.

We extend many thanks to the technical expertise of audio engineer, Arthol "DJ Ampero" Gibson, for digitizing these initial shows recovered from cassette tapes that both Jackson and Arlene had kept intact from all those years ago!

WELCOME TO THE NEW WEBSITE PAGE FOR THE JACKSON LOGAN BURNSIDE III DESIGN LIBRARY AND RESEARCH CENTRE which was officially opened in May 2021 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Burnside’s death on May 11, 2011 when donors were invited to view the space during the anniversary week!

Special thanks is extended to Antonius Roberts for granting permission for his amazing artwork to be used as the Library’s logo; to Tom Dickinson for his assistance with preparing the stacks; Arthol GIbson for his ongoing assistance in preparing the Library areas; to Nadine Ramphal for the design of the beautiful Library Signs; and to Librarian, Mrs Penelope Nottage who has, over these many years, ensured that the Library has been set up in the proper manner!

The Library is open for use by the public as of May 11, 2022 by appointment only.

The Library was formed from kind in-memoriam donations received from the public at the time of Burnside’s death, and it is comprised of his extensive personal Library of books on architecture, art, junkanoo, The Bahamas, design, and business. We would also like to thank those donors who have donated publications to the Library on art, design and dance. Their kind donations are suitably acknowledged on the inside cover of the books. As of May 2022, there are close to one thousand publications catalogued, labelled, and shelved for use by high school and tertiary students and the adult public.

In addition to the publications, there are also various audio recordings of Burnside’s “Junkanoo Talks” weekly radio shows which began on July 11, 1998 and were broadcast live, along with his co-host, Arlene Nash-Ferguson, for thirteen years; as well as examples of Burnside’s wisdom, vision, and insightful thoughts from his writings, speeches, and public speaking engagements on all things Bahamian and on the development of this country which he loved so passionately!

Special thanks is extended to Restaurants Bahamas Limited who partnered with Doongalik Studios to feature one of Burnside’s iconic Junkanoo oil on canvas paintings entitled “New Year Risin” (1980) in their Christmas 2021 Junkanoo Bucket promotion, and who also made a donation to the Library in his memory!
